Pink tablecloths, raspberry tea and bright spring fashions evoked the charms of women’s friendship at the annual Mother-Daughter Tea and Fashion Show on Saturday afternoon, sponsored by the Women’s Center at The Medical Center.
Brenda Kirk of Glasgow heard about it on TV, and called her daughter Janie McKinney of Bowling Green, who brought her own daughter, Paige.
“It sounded like something incredibly girly to do,” Janie McKinney said.
Normally, they spend a lot of time at the baseball field with her son, she said; but this time they got spend time together over china teapots surrounded by other women.
It was their first visit to the show, held in The Medical Center’s auditorium, but they plan to come back. This year brought them more than tea and clothes, as Paige McKinney won a door prize drawing for a tote bag and various accessories from The Women’s Center.
The fashion show, sponsored by Dixon’s Boutique and Gifts and Pistols ’n Petticoats children’s store in Franklin, sent three mothers and their seven daughters circling the room, showing off several outfits each.
The afternoon event drew 96 women, who paid $7 each, a full house according to Linda Rush, Community Wellness director at The Medical Center.
“We had quite a waiting list this year,” she said.
It’s been put on for years, advertised through a quarterly newsletter and local media for all community women - mothers, daughters, grandmothers, aunts and friends, Rush said.
A few like Kirk and the McKinneys made this year their first visit, but others Rush sees year after year.
Among those familiar faces is Marie Mason of Glasgow, who came with her daughter Anna Lewis, daughter-in-law Martha Mason and Mason’s daughter McKenzie Mason, all of Bowling Green.
They’ve been coming for eight years or so, looking forward to the chance to forget outside cares and enjoy family time, Lewis said.
Mason said she enjoys the delicious food and looking at the new clothes, and getting together with the friendly people the event draws.
“I look forward to it every year,” she said.
